Understanding the Measurement Principle of OMF Series Electromagnetic Flowmeters

2025-02-14

Electromagentic Flowmeter in Progress

Electromagnetic flowmeters are essential instruments in various industries for measuring the flow of conductive liquids. The OMF series flowmeters operate based on the fundamental principle of Faraday’s Law of Electromagnetic Induction, which states that a conductor moving through a magnetic field will induce a voltage (electromotive force, or EMF) proportional to the velocity of the flow. In this article, we will delve deeper into the working principle of electromagnetic flowmeters and explain how they measure the flow of liquid with high accuracy and reliability.

How OMF Series Electromagnetic Flowmeters Work

Electromagnetic Flowmeter Theory

The core of the electromagnetic flowmeter sensor is a short, non-magnetic, conductive metal tube with an insulating lining(such as Rubber, PTFE, PFA materials). The diameter of the measuring tube is denoted as “D.” Two electrodes are fixed on the measuring tube, penetrating the pipe in the radial direction. The tips of the electrodes are positioned to be nearly parallel with the inner surface of the insulating lining. When the sensor’s excitation coil is energized with a bidirectional square wave pulse, a magnetic field is generated within the measuring tube. The magnetic flux density of this field is represented by “B” and is oriented perpendicular to the axis of the measuring tube.

As the conductive liquid flows through the tube, with a certain average flow rate “V,” it intersects the magnetic lines of force, which induces an electromotive potential, or voltage, “E.” According to Faraday’s Law, this induced voltage is directly proportional to the magnetic flux density “B,” the diameter of the measuring tube “D,” and the average flow rate “V.” The induced voltage (or flow rate signal) is detected by the electrodes and sent to the converter via cable. The converter then processes and amplifies the signal to determine the flow rate and other important flow parameters, such as total volume.

Features and Advantages of OMF Series Electromagnetic Flowmeters

Electromagnetic flowmeters have several advantages, making them suitable for a wide range of applications, particularly in industries that handle conductive liquids, such as water treatment, chemical processing, and food production. Some of the key features include:

  1. Compact Structure and Short Connection Dimensions: Electromagnetic flowmeters, like the OMF series, feature a compact design that allows for easy installation, even in space-constrained environments.

  2. Wide Range of Compatible Liquids: The lining and electrode materials of these flowmeters are compatible with various liquids, including corrosive fluids and slurries. Some of the common lining materials are: Rubber, PTFE, PFA, PU, F46; Electrodes: SS316L, Hastelloy C, Titanium, Tantalum, and more.

  3. Low Power Consumption: The square wave pulse excitation method used in electromagnetic flowmeters ensures minimal power consumption while maintaining stability, especially at the zero flow point.

  4. Durability and Protection: The sensors are built with robust materials, and for applications where immersion is expected, the sensor can be equipped with intrinsic immersion structure (IP68) protection, which makes it resistant to water damage. The junction box can also be sealed with appropriate sealant for added durability.

  5. Accuracy and Reliability: Since the flow measurement is based on the electromagnetic induction principle, electromagnetic flowmeters are highly accurate and provide consistent, real-time measurements.
