Measurement Principle of Clamp-On Ultrasonic Flow Meter

2025-02-06

At Oasis Instrument Co., Ltd., we’re proud to offer our advanced clamp-on ultrasonic flow meters, designed to accurately measure the fluid velocity of liquids within closed pipes. These non-invasive meters are ideal for applications where ease of installation, minimal maintenance, and non-fouling operation are essential.

Key Benefits:

• Non-contact, non-invasive measurement: The transducers are clamped to the outside of the pipe, eliminating the need for any pipe modification.

• No fouling operation: Ideal for clean or corrosive liquids without the risk of blockages.

• Easy Installation: Quick and simple setup with minimal disruption to existing systems.

• Versatility: Works with a wide range of pipe sizes and materials, suitable for both small and large-scale industrial, commercial applications.

How It Works:

Our transit-time ultrasonic flow meters utilize two transducers that act as both transmitters and receivers of ultrasonic waves. These transducers are securely clamped onto the outside of the pipe at a specific distance from each other.

The flow meter operates by alternately transmitting and receiving frequency-modulated bursts of sound energy between the two transducers. By measuring the time it takes for the sound to travel between the transducers, we can accurately determine the liquid velocity inside the pipe. This difference in transit times is directly related to the velocity of the liquid, as shown in the diagram below.

Mounting Methods:

V-Method: The sound traverses the pipe twice.

W-Method: The sound traverses the pipe four times.

Z-Method: The transducers are mounted on opposite sides of the pipe, and the sound crosses the pipe once.

The installation method chosen depends on the specific characteristics of the pipe and the fluid being measured.

Technical Details:

Ultrasonic Clamp-on for liquid

θ: The angle of sound relative to the flow direction.

M: The ultrasonic beam travel times.

D: The pipe diameter.

T_up: The time for sound to travel from the upstream transducer to the downstream transducer.

T_down: The time for sound to travel from the downstream transducer to the upstream transducer.

ΔT = T_up – T_down.

Applications: Our clamp-on ultrasonic flow meters are perfect for various industries, including HVAC, water treatment, chemical processing, and more. The OUF-W series, a popular wall-mount model, is ideal for HVAC applications, offering reliable flow measurement with an easy-to-install design.
